OMMA STUDIO

OMMA STUDIO THEATRE was founded in 1991 in Athens by the actor and director, Antonis Diamantis. “Omma”, in the ancient Greek language, means “eye” as well as “glance”. The selection of this name is harmonious with the choice of the theatrical direction, that of the experimental theatre where research work is the primary element and demands as a prerequisite and as a result a new point of view, a new glance. The work of our group proposes new theatrical codes to the spectators. We usually perform in non-theatrical spaces, in old storehouses, abandoned buildings, old schools, in Greece and abroad. Since 1993, we have been making also street performances, because we are interested in how our technique can function in a “casual” space, like the street, where the conditions for a performance cannot be controlled. The work is based on improvisation as well as the continual exercise and training of the actors’ expressional resources; exploring how the theatre can operate in today’s world, what theatre means, what it means for a person to be a performer. Each performance begins from its final point, where nothing existed originally. There is no text, no preordained form. There is only the need to unroll the yarn, to let your own self, your body, all alone, to tell the story.

Orpheus & Euridiki

“Orpheus & Euridiki” is a street performance based on the Ancient Greek Myth, and includes all the elements that compose one street performance: acrobatics, fires, stilts, music, songs, mime, etc.
The story is about the first musician, half-God Orpheus, who does not get afraid of going, all alone with his musical instrument, lyra, down to Hades, to fight with Death, so that he can bring back to earth and the alive people his beloved Euridiki, who died because of the poison of a snake. It is a story about the beginning of music, and a story that glories love. Because even if Orpheus finally does not succeed to have back Euridiki, he has already won Death, having the only strong weapon of love beside him.
The music of this performance makes a trip in all over the world. Songs from Greece, China, Japan, India, Russia, Ireland, Serbia, Bali, Georgia, Italy, etc. accompany the actors and their actions, which are based on the Anthropological Theatre.
We believe that Love, Music and Death unite all the people in all over the world, and with the common world language of theatre we can express our opinion about this union, through this well known myth.
